Spontaneous idiopathic full-thickness macular hole closing and re-opening

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the spontaneous closure and recurrence of idiopathic macular holes. This was a single-patient case report with optical coherence tomography imaging analysis. Written informed consent was obtained from the patient for participation and publication of this report. A 40-year-old healthy female experienced spontaneous closure of an idiopathic macular hole, followed by re-opening after several years. Surgical intervention successfully resolved the recurrent macular hole, with visual acuity improving significantly postoperatively. Spontaneous closure and recurrence of idiopathic macular holes are rare phenomena with complex underlying mechanisms. Observation may be an option in certain cases, but surgical treatment remains effective for recurrences.
